As much as we like concrete and wood on the floor, we love to add character with rugs, carpets or kilims. Lately we found some unique pieces that could either add a finishing touch, or be the base and starting point of your interior. We love to work with kilims, to balance out the industrial style we have going on here. But we think kilims could work anywhere. In this post we show you our current kilim collection ánd cover some design issues that are easily solved with rugs.

How to make good use of carpets in your interior?
It can be really hard to find (vintage) kilims that are stylish and just the right size. When you go to a dealer, usually they offer too much, and it’s outdated or old fashioned in a bad way. You cannot see the wood for the trees. At Harvest we try to make a selection that is filtered in a way, so at least that problem is solved. Still, we get a lot of interior design questions from our clients so we thought we’d handle a few:
“How can we create a coherent interior using the different styles of furniture we have?”
This is something that comes up a lot, when for example, people start living together or inherit furniture that isn’t necessarily their taste. Solution: if you place an interesting rug on the floor (or wall) that brings back some of the key colours in your home, it ties everything together. It acts like ‘glue’. All of a sudden your interior makes sense. Your eyes can travel through the room a lot easier.
“Our furniture pieces (let’s say in the dining room) makes the space look a little bit ‘boring‘: we have a table, some chairs, and a buffet (or cabinet, sideboard or dresser). That’s it… What to do?”
Happens in a lot of homes. How do you solve that? One of the solutions could be: place a nice carpet under your dining table, to create an ‘island effect’ (meaning: cosy and warm). Many people never think of doing that, because it seems impractical. Just make sure it has some color and pattern going on to make it less vulnerable. Hang some artwork with the same color scheme on the wall next to it and it’s even better. You’ll see how easy it is.
“My room still feels a little bit ‘cold’ and not very cosy. How do I add ambiance?”
Let’s not forget about acoustics. Because it’s a crucial part of creating a nice and agreeable space. A carpet (or two or three:-) in your home makes everything sound much softer and less hollow, whether you put it on the floor, or on the wall. Especially when you have concrete or natural stone floors. Obviously there are more ways to create ambiance, but we’ll talk about that in another blog post.
“We’d like to change some things in our room, but we don’t want to change all the furniture or paint the walls…”
Well, carpets are your best friend! You could lay down a carpet in the winter, then store it in summer, and by the time autumn or winter comes again, you place it back. You could even circulate two carpets. Then you really have a different look every season.

We hope you enjoy these tips. If you have more questions about how to use carpets in your interior: let us know. We are planning on continuously adding more interesting carpets and kelims to the collection, so we should always have some in store. The ones we have now are vintage or antique, and are mostly handmade in Iran. We’re very specific about the color combinations, they’re not the most common, but neither are we :-).
